Fayette student to study in SpainTwo area students will have a chance to study Spanish in its mother country thanks to help from a scholarship given by the Gordon College Foundation. Winners of the Chafin Smith Study Abroad Scholarship for 2005 are Jennifer Thayer, 19, of Fayetteville and Cassie Cone, 21, of McDonough. Both are sophomores at Gordon College and will study in Barcelona, Spain. The summer opportunity will boost their study of Spanish, the students said. Thayer, a business and foreign language major, is considering attending the University of West Georgia next fall. Cone is an education major and plans to attend Georgia State for the fall semester. She said she hopes to learn more about Spains schools while there. Both students said they had decided to study overseas prior to applying for the stipend. The scholarship is awarded to students who have demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence and was endowed by Claudete Smith in memory of her late husband. Mrs. Smith and her husband valued travel abroad and its ability to broaden a persons understanding of other cultures, according to Gordon College Foundation officials. |
