Velocity lifters compete at Jr. NationalsTeam Velocity Weightlifting sent three local athletes to the Junior National Championship in St. Paul, Minn. last weekend. The local lifters were Peachtree City resident Lesley Ireland, Tyrone resident Travis Cooper and Conyers resident Chandler Alford. Ireland, a junior at Woodward Academy, competed in the 63 kg weight class and totaled 115 kg. She went three for six in her attempts. Ireland snatched 50 kg and clean and jerked 65 kg. It was the highest total for any 17 and under competitor in her weight class. She was named an alternate team member on USA Weightliftings 17 and Under Louis Cyr team. The Louis Cyr Championship will take place in Montreal on May 7. Cooper, a junior at Sandy Creek High School, competed in the 77 kg weight class and totaled 225 kg. He went five for six in his attempts. Cooper snatched 100 kg and clean and jerked 125 kg, setting two personal records in the meet. he was named a member of USA Weightliftings 17 and Under Louis Cyr team and is ranked fifth out of all the 17 and under competitors in the entire meet. Alford, a freshman at Georgia Tech, won three silver medals in the 77 kg class, finishing second in the snatch, the clean and jerk and the total. He snatched 120 kg and clean and jerked 157.5 kg for a new personal record. His total was 277.5 kg, which is another personal record. Alford is an alternate team member on the Junior World Team and will be a member of the Junior Pan American team. The Junior World Championships will take place in Seoul, Korea the week of May 15 and the Junior Pan American Games will be held in Puerto Rico in October. The next competition for the Velocity Weightlifting team will be the Matt Davis Memorial Championships in Savannah on Apr. 16. |
