Teams pick up wins as end of regular season nearsBy MICHAEL BOYLAN Its the most wonderful time of the year. At least for soccer fans in Fayette County, that is. The state soccer playoffs are right around the corner and for the powerhouses that reside in this county and the fans that support them that means that good times and great soccer are ahead. The teams have to finish their regular schedules first. The Starrs Mill Lady Panthers, ranked first in AAAAA, hosted Milton on Tuesday night and won 3-2. Milton struck first but Starrs Mill responded three minutes later with a goal by Kelley OHara off of an assist from Viktoria Frost. With just over a minute to play in the half, Milton struck again and entered the break leading 2-1. The score remained the same for close to 30 minutes in the second half but the Lady Panthers got two goals in the final 11 minutes to get the win and remain undefeated. Adrienne Phillps scored the equalizing goal unassisted, while Gina Goforth scored the go ahead goal off of an assist from Sarah Burke with just over a minute remaining. Starrs Mills boys, ranked ninth in AAAAA, tied Milton 2-2. Nick Bugara scored on an assist from Kyle Nowicki and Chip Rutland scored a goal with Wes Kent assisting. Coach Mike Hanie felt the team did not play very well and missed several chances to to win in the last five minutes. The McIntosh Lady Chiefs played their final region game of the regular season and won. They defeated Woodward Academy 3-1 with goals from Jesse Lenze, Kellie Myles and Brittany Schneider. Myles and Schneider also had assists in the win. On Tuesday, the Lady Chiefs defeated Shiloh 2-1 with Lenze and Schneider scoring the goals and Caroline Austin and Kelsey Quinn getting the assists. McIntosh will take on Pope at Newnan High Schools practice field tonight at 6 p.m. and will play Summerville, S.C. on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Newnan. Whitewaters girls, ranked 10th in AAAA, fell to Lassiter 1-0 on Tuesday night. They will play at Druid Hills at noon tomorrow with the boys game following at 2 p.m. Sandy Creeks boys defeated Fayette County 2-1 on Tuesday while the Lady Patriots lost 2-1. Sandy Creek played at Northgate last night after the paper went to press and will host Lovejoy tonight with games at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Earlier in the week, Landmark Christians boy fell to Holy Innocents 9-1, while the girls lost 7-1. Wednesday night saw the boys and girls from Fayette County defeat Newnan keeping them undefeated in region play as they head into their final region 4-AAAAA game of the season against Starrs Mill. The wins guarantee both teams home games to start the state playoffs. The Lady Tigers won 2-0 and the boys won 4-1. Fayette County will host Starrs Mill tonight with the girls game starting at 5:45 p.m. and the boys game following at 8 p.m. |
