Starrs Mill boys and girls and McIntosh girls capture region crownsThe Starrs Mill boys and girls tennis teams won the region 4-AAAAA championships over Fayette County last week. In the boys first region championship in two years, the Panthers defeated the Tigers 5-0. Singles winners for the boys were Derrick Davisson (6-0,6-0), Eric Jackson (6-1,6-2) and Evan Foster (6-0,6-1). The doubles team of Keith Kowal and Ben Matlaga won their match (6-2, 6-3) as did Thomas Davisson and Stefan Mayer (6-1, 6-0). Other players for the boys are Ahmed Mahama, Duncan Conner, Willie Hughes, Jake McPherson and Ryan Cook. The boys open the state tournament today against the fourth seed from region 2-AAAAA. If the Panthers win they will take on the winner of Jenkins and Colquitt County next Wednesday. The Lady Panthers also won 5-0 with Gabby Acuna (6-1,6-2), Jessica Lange (6-3,6-1) and Lindsay Dillon (6-2,6-0) all winning singles matches, while the teams of Caroline Smith and Arianna Acuna (6-3,6-1) and Ashley Sxczerpanicac and Jenna McPherson (6-0,6-0) won in doubles. Other players for the girls are Haley Staples, Ashley Blair, Hanna Thompkins and Allison Stock. Starrs Mill opens the state tournament tomorrow with a game against the fourth seed from region 2-AAAAA. If they win they will take on the winner of Camden County and Lowndes next Thursday. The boys and girls tennis teams are coached by Silas Brown. McIntoshs girls won the region 4-AAAA championship with wins over Alexander in the semi-finals and Woodward Academy in the finals. The Lady Chiefs defeated Alexander 3-0. Stephanie Daughenbaugh (6-1,6-0) and Keegan Vining (6-2,6-0) won for singles while the doubles team of Lyndsi Tufte and Lauren Wilde won 6-3,6-2. Kendall Wilde was leading 6-4,4-1 when her match was pulled and the doubles team of Kristin Cobb and Jessica Piester were up 6-2,2-3 when their match was pulled. Against Woodward, Kendall Wilde lost (6-7,3-6) while Daughenbaugh (6-1,6-0) Vining (6-4,1-6,6-4 ) and the teams of Tufte and Wilde (6-3,6-3) and Cobb and Piester (7-6,7-6) were all winners. The McIntosh girls will take on Wayne County on Saturday and will face the winner of Ware County and Region 3 seed 2 on Thursday. The McIntosh boys finished as runners up, defeating Alexander 3-0 in the semifinals but losing to Woodward Academy 2-3 in the finals. Stefan James (6-2,6-0) and Joe Styga (6-0,6-0) got singles wins against Alexander while the team of Francois Pienaar and Alexander Reimer(6-0,6-0) won in doubles. Nathan She was up 6-3,1-0 and the doubles team of Will Truex and Erik Knapp were up 2-0 before their matches were pulled. Against Woodward, James (6-4,2-6,6-4) and the team of Pienaar and Reimer (6-4,2-6,6-4) were the only winners for McIntosh. The McIntosh boys will host Statesboro today and will face the winner of Americus-Sumter/Region 3 seed 1 on Wednesday. |
