Tyrone eyes WielandBy LEE WILLIAMS
John Wieland Homes officials will have another shot at securing approval to rezone 217 acres to build an upscale 160-home subdivision dubbed Tyrone II off Ga. Highway 74 South and Kirkley Road. The Tyrone City Council is expected to weigh in on the matter during its 7 p.m. meeting Thursday at Town Hall. The Tyrone Planning Commission unanimously shot down the proposal during its April 28 meeting after hearing opposition from several residents. The planning commissions vote is advisory only; the town council gets the final say in the matter. Tyrone II would feature 2,800-square-foot and above single-family homes with a starting price tag of $300,000. The minimum lot size would be a half-acre. A recreational area would be included in the subdivision. In the proposal, Wieland agreed to set aside land that would be used for the Sandy Creek Road extension: A $5.1 million project that was nixed from the list of transportation items SPLOST funds would have been used for. The mere mention of a Sandy Creek Road extension has garnered more opposition from some residents since it was resident opposition that killed the extension in the first place, Fayette County Public Safety Director Lee Hearn indicated. Wieland officials boast the subdivision would be a plus for Tyrone, but at least five residents, who all spoke out against the subdivision, disagree. Residents say the subdivision would bring increased traffic and more density to the largely rural community and ultimately destroy their remarkable quality of life. According to the map of the subdivision, the proposed extension starts out at Ga. Highway 74 in Tyrone and ends at the rock quarry owned by Davidson Mineral Products. Tyrone City Manager Barry Amos confirmed Tuesday the issue would be addressed. However, he was unsure just how large the turnout would be. Amos said the council is looking forward to the meeting. The mayor and council are always interested in citizen input, Amos said. |
