County may decide fate of Tyrone parkBy JOHN THOMPSON
The town of Tyrone could find out tomorrow night if its master plan for the redevelopment of Shamrock Park will move ahead. The Fayette County Commission will hear a request from Tyrone Councilman Mike Smola on lifting the deed restrictions for the redevelopment of Shamrock Park. Smola is also expected to provide the County Commission the results of a survey sent to town residents asking about proposed locations for the new library, along with a town hall and police station. For more than a month, proponents and opponents of the plan to recreate Shamrock Park into the towns downtown area have verbally jousted at Tyrones meetings. Opponents have stated the town did not seek enough input, while proponents have said Shamrock Park is a perfect fit for a municipal complex. Despite all the rhetoric, the final say could come from the County Commission. Years ago, the county deeded the park to Tyrone but stipulated the land could only be used for recreation purposes. If the county chooses not to lift those deed restrictions, Tyrone would be forced to choose an alternative location for the library. In other actions, the commission will: Consider a request from Humber Construction to build a 32-home subdivision on McBride Road. The developer is seeking to rezone the property from Agricultural-Residential to Conservation-Subdivision. During the last year, the County Commission has turned down two requests to rezone the property for office buildings. Listen to a request From 54 West LLC to rezone 16.66 acres on Ga. Highway 54 West from Agricultural-Residential to Office-Institutional to build an office park west of Sandy Creek Road and near Piedmont Fayette Hospital. Consider a proposal from Powertel to build a telecommunications tower on 49.75 acres near Dogwood Trail. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the Fayette County Administrative Complex in Fayetteville. |
