In a special called meeting Tuesday morning, the Coweta County Board of Education reaffirmed an earlier vote naming the athletic fields at Northgate High School after longtime educator Harry Seldon.

Last week, the board had voted 3-1 to name the fields after Seldon, who coached and taught at Central High School for a number of years. But Superintendent of Education Richard Brooks explained that at least four board members must vote for an item before it can be passed.

The issue of naming the fields for Seldon has come under fire from members of the Northgate community who urged the board to wait on naming the fields. One of the most vocal opponents has been Peter Skrmetti, who has bombarded the local media with letters asking the board to take a longer look at the proposal.

While Skrmetti believes Seldon should be honored by the board, he questions whether the Northgate fields are the most appropriate venue. Skrmetti suggested the board name the system's new technical school at Central after Seldon and let the fields at Northgate be named after someone from the north Coweta school's community.

After the full board voted to name the fields after Seldon Tuesday, Brooks said Seldon was "a very deserving person" and echoed his support for the board's action. But Brooks refused to say if Northgate was the most appropriate locating and said he did not even make a recommendation to the board on the proposal.

"That's strictly the board's business," he said.
