A Fayette County State Court jury last week awarded a record judgment in a personal-injury case involving a 1997 automobile accident. Elizabeth Jefferson was awarded $23,009.24 from Clifford E. Pittman for medical expenses, $3,400 for lost wages and $250,000 for pain and suffering, the jury ruled May 25. The accident in question occurred Oct. 4, 1997, according to court documents. Jefferson claimed that, as she was driving north on Ga. Highway 279 near Mayfair Lane, Pittman came southbound and turned into her path without warning, causing the two vehicles to collide. Jefferson charged that Pittman was negligent in failing to yield the right-of-way when making a left turn and failing to maintain control of his vehicle, which was a direct cause of her injuries. More than a dozen medical bills were entered as evidence during the trial, as well as photographs of the damaged vehicles.
