To kick off the National Black Arts Festival on the Southside, Wood Is Wonderful Gallery in association with F.A.A.M.E. ARTS will premiere a staged reading of a new short play written by Erika Parkins (graduate student in New York University's Journalism program) called FREEDOM ANYHOW! FREEDOM ANYHOW! is based on the life of Harriet Jacobs, a former slave who escaped the advances of her master by hiding in the garret above her grandmother’s porch for 7 years. The idea of re-capturing the important history of slave narratives in the Wood Is Wonderful Gallery Summer Arts Series is the brainchild of Vandora Scott Crowder, who was inspired by Carter G. Woodson’s book, The Miseducation of the Negro. Wood Is Wonderful Gallery, a southwest Atlanta art gallery run by Vandora’s husband and master artisan, Yusef Crowder, will host this exciting evening of drama, dance, spoken word, and visual art.
