Dogwood Gallery to Preview Hollingsworth House Chair-ity Event ChairsNovember 10th through November 15th, The Dogwood Gallery, in Tyrone, GA, is hosting a preview of the intricate and unique chairs that will be sold at the upcoming November 30th Hollingsworth House Chair-ity Event in Fayetteville. The Chair-ity event will benefit the abandoned and abused children who live at the Children’s Village at Christian City. PTC Veterans Day Speaker Authored Book on Experiences Behind Enemy LinesRetired Army Colonel Ben Malcom, author of “White Tigers – My Secret War in North Korea,” will be guest speaker at the Peachtree City Veterans Day event on Saturday, Nov. 7th, 10 a.m. at the new Falcon Field Veterans Memorial. Ben Goss and WHS lacrosseOn Sunday October 11th, Ben Hester, Brandon Lee and Blake Jaurigue, members of the Whitewater H.S. varsity lacrosse team and the Georgia Copperheads club team visited with Ben Goss at the Shepherd Spinal Center in Atlanta. Ben Goss was a passenger in a car in Massachusetts that was involved in a wreck, three other passengers walked away with minor injuries, unfortunately for Ben he took the brunt of the accident with a C-7 spinal cord injury. These players collected a bag of items from their lacrosse that included a hoodie, sweat pants, t-shirts, equipment bag and other items as Ben was made an honorary member of the Whitewater lacrosse team. The players all agreed that this humbling experience makes wins and losses in a different perspective. Cutest Chick Found in ClassroomThe cutest chick in Fayette County is in Dana Wrenn’s pre-K classroom at Brooks Elementary. Wrenn’s 20 students watched in amazement on October 9 as a baby chicken broke through its eggshell and hatched after two days of pecking. Bands Earn High Honors at CompetitionsThe Fayette County High Marching Tigers made their own history by placing fifth overall in the Bands of America Regional Championship, the highest placement the band has ever received at this competition. The Fall Festival is open to all YP Fayette members and those interested in becoming a member. The festival will feature a horseshoe tournament and sack race competition. Women in engineeringOn Oct. 8, Lainie Beth Long was selected to attend Georgia Tech’s Women in Engineering program. Long was allowed to visit the different Engineering departments at Geogia Tech. The program is sponsored by Eaton, John Deere and Shell Oil Company. Long attended Civil and Environmental Engineering, Industrial and Systems Engineering and Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. She later attended a luncheon with a panel of professional women engineers. And after scrutinizing a painting she found at an antique shop in Brooks in 2005, Lamont has come to believe the painting of Geronimo is an authentic Frederic Remington. “I knew it was by a good artist. It was very captivating,” Lamont said of the painting that was part of an estate sale that had come from California. “The shop had good art that was being snatched up fast.” Club Z! Future writers learn about lifetime skillPeachtree City, Georgia: Kids from all over the metro-Atlanta area gathered at the offices of Gallopade International to learn how good writing is a lifetime essential skill. The writing workshop was titled, “Do You Think I Could Write for Disney One Day, Mrs. Marsh?” For an hour and half the kids learned how to improve their writing skills and explore the wonder of turning what is in their head and their heart into words on a printed page. They focused on educational and career paths that would benefit from a talent and love of writing, including programs at colleges such as the Savannah College of Art and Design and companies like Disney. Guests of host Huie Bray, they saw the sights of north Georgia and discussed, once again, their adventures aboard the ship that carried the Allied officers to the USS Missouri to sign the peace treaty ending World War II in August, 1945. Westpark Toastmasters Induct New MemberWestpark Toastmasters members recently welcomed Thomas Haft as a new member of their club. Thomas visited for almost six months as a guest of club member Paulette Bass. Paulette is the first documented developmentally disabled Toastmaster to achieve the Advanced Communicator status. Thomas, who is also developmentally disabled, said he hopes to follow in her footsteps and achieve his Competent Communicator status within his first year of membership. Dragon boat winnersThe top three teams at this year’s Dragon Boat Races in Peachtree City were World Gym Staff in first place, Peachtree City Running Club in second place and Falcon Aviation in third place. The World Gym team is made up of not only personal trainers, but managers/supervisors, group fitness instructors, child care and front desk staff. Kim Hershey, general manager of the local World Gyms, stated that it was “truly a team effort from a group of individuals who all believe in the importance of staying fit. ‘Fit To Paddle’ is our theme.” Fayette County civitan officersThe Fayette County Civitan Club installed the officers for the 2009-2010 year September 25th at their annual banquet. Heritage Travel ClubThe Heritage of Peachtree Travel Club takes many interesting trips to various locations around Georgia, usually taking one big trip a month. In August, they enjoyed a trip to the Little White House at Warm Springs followed by lunch at the Bullock House. Most recently, the Club spent the day at the Georgia Aquarium, and watched the Beluga Whales. The group then ate at the famous Varsity, an Atlanta landmark. Hood have great newsHood Avenue Primary hosted its first training session today, September 29, 2009, for over 30 Literacy Reading and Math Coaches. These are parents and community members who are partnering with Hood Avenue Primary School for Student Success. They received training on various reading and math activites that they will use while working with students. Each Reading and Math Coach have committed 30-40 minutes 2-3 times per week. The Literacy Reading and Math Coach Project is one of the school's initiatives for this school year. The school is so excited to have this strong partnership with the parents and community members that will benefit the students.
