Local group dedicates grave markers

The Frankie Lyle Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Texas Division, United Daughters of the Confederacy held a ceremony dedicating the grave markers honoring the memory of 11 soldiers of the 10th Regiment, Texas Infantry on Saturday, April 5 at the Patrick R. Cleburne Confederate Cemetery in Jonesboro. Ga. Bettye Baty placed the Texas Division wreath while a descendant of one of the Texas soldiers placed Texas soil and a Texas flag in front of the grave markers. Daughters from the Frankie Lyle Chapter placed a yellow rose on each Texas soldier’s grave.

Becky West wins state DAR award

Rebecca “Becky” M. West, of Fayetteville, Ga., has been named Outstanding Chapter Regent at the recent state conference of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in Athens.

West received a certificate and pin to add to the numerous others she has already earned. She said, “It is the smallest pin on the DAR ribbon, but, it is the biggest job in this organization you’ll ever undertake at the local level.”

Making a difference

They may be young, but siblings Tess and Tylen Janisch aren’t waiting to make a difference in the world. Tess is 5 years old and a preschooler at First Presbyterian.

Coweta-Fayette Rotary Club visits Line Creek Nature Area

The Coweta-Fayette Rotary Club visited Line Creek Nature Area on Monday, May 5, in an evening that combined a Cinco de Mayo-themed supper, program by Southern Conservation Trust’s director Abby Jordan and the creek visit.

Making a difference

Kids wanted for mural

This weekend’s art show has a little something extra for the younger set. This year, organizers are seeking children to help complete a mural that will be hanging at the annual Old Courthouse Art Show in Fayetteville. Each participant will get an "I helped paint the Courthouse House mural" ribbon or medal after helping color in the mural, which will hang in the Fayette County School System tent throughout the weekend. The session offers a sensible guide to help you become knowledgeable about properly expressing your wishes regarding advance medical directives, wills, trusts and power of attorney.

• Jackson named to dean's list
Jenna L. Jackson, of Fayetteville, Ga., has been named to the dean's list at Mercer University in Macon for the 2007 fall semester. She was invited to join Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society which is the oldest and largest honor society for first-year college students. Students must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale during their first year. Members are also eligible for scholarships and awards awarded through the national scholarship committee. Jackson is a 2007 graduate of Sandy Creek High School.

The winner this year in the 55 and over age category is Barbara Carden, 70, of Brooks. Mrs. Carden was nominated by her six children, who shout her praises from A-Z. We noted that four of those children were born in six years and then a set of twins came along eight years later.

• Fayetteville native to head to flight training for duty
U.S. Coast Guard Academy First Class Cadet Joel Kurucar was one of 220 U.S. Coast Guard Academy first class cadets to learn what unit they will be assigned to after graduation at billet night on March 6. Kurucar, who will earn a commission as an ensign in the Coast Guard upon graduation, will report to flight training, in Pensacola Fla. for his first tour of duty. “It’s really exciting to be offered this great opportunity,” said Kurucar.

Whitewater Students host children's field day

A group of students from Whitewater High School are hosting a children’s field day on May 4 to raise funds to build an orphanage in Uganda. The idea to raise funds for children in Uganda, who have been left homeless due to civil war, the HIV/Aids epidemic and malaria, was born after some students had watched a documentary film in one of their classes about the plight of these children.

The Fayette County Public Library will host a special evening with critically-acclaimed author Ron Rash on Monday, May 5, beginning at 7 p.m. Rash is the author of the award-winning novels “Saints at the River,” “One Foot in Eden,” “The World Made Straight,” and several books of short fiction, including “Chemistry and Other Stories.” “Chemistry and Other Stories” was a 2008 finalist for the prestigious PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction. The event is free and open to the public and sponsored by the Fayette County Public Library and the Friends of the Fayette County Public Library.
