Lake McIntosh gets approval, while McNally gets removed as primary county attorney

On the night of one his greatest accomplishments, Fayette County attorney Bill McNally was voted out of his primary job.
The Fayette County Commission announced Thursday the long-awaited permit for Lake McIntosh had been granted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The reservoir will supply more than 10 million gallons of water after a four-year construction phase. The 650-acre reservoir is on Line Creek, between Fayette and Coweta counties.
Shortly after thanking McNally for his hard work in the 30 years it took to obtain the permit, the County Commission voted 4-1 to have an in-house attorney hired to do the county's primary legal work. Commissioner Eric Maxwell made the motion and said the county would save thousands of dollars by utilizing an attoney on staff. He did recommend that if the scope of work exceeded the attorney's knowledge that McNally be used as a the outside attorney.
Commissioner Peter Pfeifer voted against the measure.

What effect will the reservoir have on Line Creek?
Also, perhaps I'm not seeing the entire issue here, but I must question our reasoning behind building a new reservoir when the several of our existing bodies of water including Lake Kedron and Huddleston Pond are barren as it is.
Can anyone reassure me as to the wisdom of this plan?

Peter seems to be the odd man out on just about every issue.

I loved the letter he wrote to the newspaper where he said Peachtree City was getting double taxed on EMS and it was Peachtree City's fault. How stupid is that?

I don't believe it. McNally's gone????? The commission did the right thing????? I'm shocked. Wow... well done guys. Perhaps congress and the president should take a lesson on serving the people.

I'm stunned. Way to go guys. Now if Eric will only do the next "right thing" and quit supporting our DA... Mr. Softy.

Git Real, Help me understand this

I come to this discussion from 2 points. First, when the subject of the county attorney came up, Eric said that it had to do with saving the taxpayers money. And, hey, who wouldn't be in favor of saving money, right? So, now, rather than bidding out the services, we're actually duplicating them??? We're either saving money or we aren't; he's either good for the county or he isn't but this middle-of-the-road compromise doesn't make any sense. And, given the outright disdain people here have shown for McNally, what was given away in order to keep him? What will we taxpayers have to endure to hold up the politicians' back-room deal? This can't be good for us . . . it strains credibility to claim that it could.

Second, what, exactly, did McNally do that has earned the contempt of so many people here? I'm not trying to be funny but I honestly don't get what all the fuss is about. And, if what he is accused of "doing" is filing the suits the previous commissioners told him to file, I don't understand how he is to blame. Lawyers are just cannon fodder; they march in the direction they're told and take the fire that comes with it.

So, honestly, help me understand this 'cause I'm really stumped.

We have grown so much and become so much more sophisticated in our issues that hiring a quality attorney in house with good credentials is time. We will have no trouble attracting a strong person to fill the position.

Credit to Eric for the compromise.

On the reservoir issue, I still worry that this may be a developer's Trojan Horse.

Fayette Taxpayers Pay For Coweta Water ????

Hopefully the commission put some protection into Lake Mac since a ruling from 20 years ago stated that if the lake falls into Coweta Co., then there's nothing Fayette can do to keep them from pulling water from it.
We may end up with only half of the water in the lake if Coweta build a pump station on their side of the lake.

Our county tax dollars weren't spent to "build" the Chattahoochie.

If Fayette County tax dollars are spent on Lake Mac, then the developers that own the land that now become lake front properties, will have a windfall at our expense.

PLUS, Coweta County will have legal rights to draw whatever they want from the lake and don't have to pay Fayette anything in return.

So lots of folks win, while Fayette Taxpayers foot the bill.
