Hilton Head

I haven't been in a few years (five to be exact) and it has really changed. It was kind of gross. People were not only drinking beer while in the ocean, but smoking and flicking their cigarette butts as well. They were loud and annoying. One day, I walked into the surf and three cigarette butts floated by my ankles. Yuck. I stayed at the HH beach and tennis club. Is this the wrong place to stay? I used to like that place because it's actually on the beach. Are their still nice places on the island?

I think HHI is just like any other place you go, there are good areas and bad areas. There are parts of PTC that one could drive through and think what a dump! On the other hand there are areas that are drop-jaw beautiful. Admittedly HHI has built up and become way too commercial, one must consider that "progress" is everywhere.

Seems every time I drive anywhere locally, some other piece of land has been graded for some new ????? strip mall, a bunch of little houses crammed together subdivision, or whatever. Just breaks my heart to see some of the "old time" properties selling out.

I'm sure many of us long-time HHI visitors are sad to see the changes, but get that sand under my toes and see and hear the ocean and I'm good. Sorry your visit wasn't what you wanted it to be, that's progress for ya.

I have stayed at Shipyard before, both at a condo and at the Marriot (now Crowne) and enjoyed it. Unfortunately, I can't afford the Crowne and no longer have the "condo connection." I like HH because it's only 4 hours away and therefore, great for a long weekend (or even a regular weekend). I've eaten at the Crazy Crab, but really like Hudson's and find it to be a close second to Williams. But as Jane wrote, as long as I've got the sand and the sound of the waves, I'm good for a while! I go to Savannah/Tybee a lot too, usually in the off-season. I absolutely love the history and never get tired of looking at the beautiful buildings.

Yes, you stayed at the wrong place. 'He', the owner, will now call you and try to get you to come back.

We made the mistake of staying there once a couple of years ago too on a 'weekend drive by' ... it was not good for us either.

It took us an hour just to check in and it went downhill from there. The whole place was just plain 'nasty'.

Hilton Head has changed but you did stay at the wrong place.

In my opinion of course.

I can't help but wonder if Fayette will retain its value like HH or just slide into the dumper. HH is little rough around the edges, especially when you come into HH down 78 through Beaufort. It's kind of like a reverse PTC with bottleneck interchange at 74 and I-85. All in all, HH is still cool.

Beach and Tennis was great 20 years ago. Now, the best places for hotels are the Hilton or the Marriott ocean front hotels inside Palmetto Dunes (a gated community). Pricey but sweet.

The best econo route is the Red Roof Inn and you can access the public beach at the south end by Colgny Plaza.

Pay the $5 to go in the south island and have lunch at the Crazy Crab (with a hot buttered rum or cold beer) and walk to the top of the lighthouse. You can also take a dolphin cruise and get a glimpse of Daufuskie Island, where those naughty politicians got shamed into early retirement. The Crazy Crab on the north island is excellent for dinner. There are some 5 stars that come and go but I don't look for a top notch restaurant when I go to the beach.

HH is still cool. Ask David Rast in PTC. He did a good job when he worked in Planning down there.

Are a great combination in my opinion. But it wasnt' me, I don't smoke. I haven't been to HH in a while. I prefer more "surf" than they have there or at the Georgia coast. New Smyrna Beach has been my summer hangout for about 15 years now.

I like beer too, but on the beach! I've been going to Anna Maria Island (gulfside) for the past 5 years and really like it. The beach isn't private, but the access is and that makes for very, very small crowds. No waves though, it's usually flat, but very clear, much like the Corona commercial.

These are two of my favorite things!

My place is Cocoa Beach--perhaps a mile north of PAFB. My mom has a condo on the beach, and this is where I stash all of my surfboards.

(Only trouble: There is nowhere to get Sweetwater IPA down there. It's either Snake Dog or Redhook or Sierra Nevada.)
