Westmoreland draws a challenger in Congressional raceThu, 05/01/2008 - 3:37pm

Rep. Lynn Westmoreland has drawn a Democratic challenger in his bid for re-election to the Third Congressional District. Newnan attorney Stephen Camp qualified this week for the position. As of noon, Thursday no Republican opposition had qualified for Westmoreland’s post. If Camp and Westmoreland remain the lone qualifiers, the will face off in the November 4 general election. In other qualifying news: District One Coweta County Commissioner Paul Poole qualified, along with Democrat Bill Wood. Wood is a former City Councilman in Senoia. In the District Four Commission race, two Republicans, Rodney Brooks and Gary DeGeorge Jr. qualified for the post currently held by Commissioner Leigh Schlumper. Schlumper has already announced that she did not plan to run again. No one has qualified in the District Five Commission that is currently occupied by Chairman Tim Higgins. Higgins has also indicated that he will not run. Here’s a complete list of other candidates that have qualified: • Incumbent Republican Clerk of Superior Court Cindy Brown. • Incumbent Republican Sheriff Mike Yeager. • Coroner candidates and fellow Republicans Mike Hutson and Ray Yeager Jr. • Incumbent Republican Solicitor Robert Stokely and challenger Randy Coggin. • Incumbent Republican Tax Commissioner Tommy Ferrell. • Incumbent Republican State Senator Mitch Seabaugh and Democratic challenger Betty Aaron from Palmetto. • Incumbent State Representative and Republicans Lynn Smith and Billy Horne.
