Will visit WWII Memorial in Washington D.C. on free day trip

Several buses full of WWII veterans from Fayette County got an emotional and patriotic send-off this morning as they began their trip to visit Washington, D.C.

The trip was courtesy of Honor Flight Fayette Inc, a non-profit organization that raised the funds to make the trip free of charge to the veterans.

The veterans, donned in matching T-shirts and caps, will be escorted around Washington on tour buses and will return home on an AirTran flight.

The Citizen's Carolyn Cary is with them and will have their stories in next week's edition of The Citizen.

Mark, when you first spoke of sending our greatest generation to Washington D.C., almost a year ago today... I was in awe of the idea and the passion I heard in your voice.

I can be no more proud of a friend than I am of you now. The trip was a huge success, and the dedication displayed by you and Gail validates the achievements of those that fought, for not only our freedoms, but the freedoms of everyone, everywhere.

Amen to your comments regarding the well deserved thanks going to our WWII Veterans. Indeed, and special thanks to Gail Sparrow (President, Honor Flight Fayette) and Mark Buckner (Vice President, Honor Flight Fayette) for having the vision and tenacity to plan the program and see it through. This success also speaks volumes of the greater Fayette Community. Seeing the support for these national heroes from the greater Fayette Community -- in terms of time, resources and presence on 14 May -- just makes any American proud!!
