We would all be better served if the candidates and their supporters focused on the real issues. The vacuum created by the absence of respectful discourse is filled with meaningless name calling and political posturing.

The general consensus abroad is that America's best days are well behind her and we are in a steep decline as an economic, military and political global power. There is plenty of hard data to support that view. I travel abroad for my job and I hear that opinion everywhere I go.

You are correct, sugarfoot, Lynn Westmoreland, America's Stupidest Congressman™, did not vote on the original 1965 Votng Rights Act. However, the act was due to expire in 2007 unless it was renewed.

In 2006, it was a foregone conclusion that it would be political suicide to vote against renewal, but once again Lynn Westmoreland, America's Stupidest Congressman™, stepped up to the plate and led a token resistance to the Act's renewal.

He prolly didn't like the fact that a certain segment of the population in his district was gettin' uppity.

It definitely is a racially-charged word, usually followed by the "N" word instead of "black man." Citing the Webster dictionary is specious, as is a man born and raised in the South saying he never heard the word used in a racist context before.

If the word "uppity" is by default a racially-charged word, then why in the world would Mr. Thomas had to have said the word "black"? We would have just known what he meant. A word being used in conjunction with another word for a racist context does not alter the true meaning of the word.

I am not originally from the South but even I know that "uppity" has been used by whites to refer to blacks who expect to be treated as equal to whites.

It is a "loaded" word and no person with any sense uses it to refer to a black person today.

Except to starry-eyed Republicans of the Christian Right, Sarah Palin is transparently unprepared to be Vice-President. Her speech last night was a joke filled with smart-a** jibes at the Democrats. Such a speech, filled with lies and half-truths, thrilled the convention crowd.

But in the days and weeks ahead she will have to face reporters and be in debates where she will have to explain her positions, the few that she has, and to try to defend the phoney political myth that McCain's people have created about her years in Alaska.

And the real pathetic loser this week is John McCain. The Godfathers of the Christian Right forced McCain to pick Palin because of her extreme anti-abortion views. The Christian Right does not care about "Country First", only that the Republican candidate bow to its extremist views. Poor John McCain in desparation agreed to take Palin.

In an interview this morning with Charles Gibson, poor old John actually said that Palin had experience in foreign affairs because Alaska is next to Russia. Even I, an Obama supporter, felt sorry for McCain. After 30 years or so in Washington, McCain must resort to saying that expertise in foreign affairs may come from living in a state bordering another country. My God!!!

For the Christian Right, Palin is just a tool it will use to perpetuate its influence.

For John Mccain, Palin's selection is proof of his poor judgment and evidence that we dare not trust him to be President.

.....and so was her speech last night that was pure red meat to the right-wing base. McCain isn't going to have trouble drawing campaign donations or enthusiastic crowds any longer. It's no longer a Bob Dole campaign. The Repubs rolled up their sleeves last night and are ready to get down and dirty. If Obama and the Dems braintrust think they can take the high road, they'll get wiped-out by letting the Repubs define them yet again. Presidential politics can be a nasty business and the weak don't win. Repubs already know from experience that running on issues sounds nice, but obtaining victories is usually accomplished for them by lowering the bar on the discussion and attacking the hell unmercifully out of the opponent. Until the dems figure out how to beat that approach(it's not by trying to stay "above it all" either, they'll be in the L column in November.

Palin's speech not only fired up the base supporters a lot, it wisely brought into the discussion Harry Reid, a guy that should be constant campaign fodder for his bombastic personality and easy-to-dislike nature. The more focus on Congress and clowns like Pelosi and Reid, the better it is for Repubs. If it is all BUSH BUSH BUSH, not good for the Repubs at all. Since congress has close to a single digit approval rating, the Repubs have a great opportunity to really hammer it at the leaders in Reid and Pelosi. Add in that Reid will sooner or later respond with some kind of hysterical blast over the heat and it's a winning strategy.

Palin isn't THAT inexperienced in the #2 spot when you are talking about Obama at the #1 spot on the Dems ticket. Please. It doesn't really matter anyways since the object for McCain is to WIN and Palin helps him in that area. All the analysis of whether Palin is this or that as a VP is rather overblown. The analysis is geared more towards those who have already made up their minds on either side and just want to hear someone agree with their opinion. It's brilliant political strategy when all you care about is winning.

well, Gingrich had a platform to also go along with the take no prisoners mentality. The issues were actually better than the rhetoric and Gingrich derailed his whole agenda by wanting to fight rather than continuing to legislate the contract with America. It sure didn't break my heart when he took Jim Wright down, but it went to Newt's head and he fell in love with the power too much.

McCain I'm not so sure had much of anything to fall back on besides his experience and his claim that he's more capable of being Prez than others. He certainly has not much that appeals to the hard right and those who want an all-out culture fight. Moderates probably see him as being overly pragmatic at times and then too stubborn and hardheaded others.

But "uppity" is not a noun - it is an adjective and it means exactly what it sounds like. The adjective (yes, check with your teachers in Coweta County) is sometimes used as a modifier for the "n-word" which is entirely inappropriate and certainly not what Representative Westmoreland said or meant. He is not an idiot, well, ok he is, but he's not a racist idiot.
