“On October 1, 2009, the President signed a Continuing Resolution (CR) to keep government programs running at their current spending levels for one month. This was necessary because Congress has not yet passed the annual appropriations bills which fund all government programs into the new fiscal year, which began October 1st.

Will Congress' defunding of ACORN expire Saturday?

When both houses of Congress voted to defund ACORN several weeks ago, what they actually did was bar lawmakers and federal agencies from giving any money to the community organizing group for the duration of the temporary budget agreement, or continuing resolution, that was in effect at the time. Continuing resolutions are used to extend federal spending, and keep the government running, when Congress can't agree on appropriations bills for the fiscal year. When the congressional defunding of ACORN went into effect on October 1, there was a continuing resolution in place that would last until October 31 -- this Saturday. The ACORN ban was in that resolution, so it will also expire on Saturday.

There are still no appropriations bills in place, so this week Congress will have to pass another continuing resolution to keep the federal government going. The word on the Hill is that the new resolution will probably be written to last until sometime in December.

The question is: will the ACORN defunding language be in the new resolution? The answer appears to be yes, at least for now. "We will do a CR this week that will basically extend the expiration date of the old CR, so the old language will stay," says one House Republican aide. The aide is "99.9 percent sure" that the ACORN prohibition will be in the new resolution; if Democrats tried to remove it, the aide says, "we would have a big fight this week."

Provided the ACORN ban stays for now, the real issue will be what happens when the new continuing resolution expires and actual appropriations bills are passed in December. Will there be a provision that says no funds from fiscal year 2010 will go to ACORN? Republicans are cautiously confident. "Democrats have a minority in their caucus that believes we should not have cut off ACORN," the aide says. "But I can't believe that there's a majority in their caucus that wants to fund ACORN."

Among the details Issa and Collins asked Secretary Napolitano to provide were a comprehensive listing of all grants provided by DHS to ACORN and its affiliates, an explanation about the criteria DHS considered for rendering such a grant, any grant awarded from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and DHS’s oversight plan to ensure grants awarded are spent in a manner consistent with the legislation.

The CR that Obama placed on the Budget included ACORN'S FUNDING.. IT EXPIRED AND WAS NOT ETENDED on Oct 31st.

2. The Oct.31 statement is accurate for May 7, 2009.

3. The Senate voted September 14 to cut off funding for ACORN. The House voted to defund ACORN just three days later.

4. All previous and future funding allocated to ACORN is now under investigation.

5. October 31 has no relevance to what is currently happening with ACORN.

Senate cuts ACORN funds
The Baltimore Sun is reporting today that the U.S. Senate voted 83-7 to make ACORN ineligible for Housing and Urban Development grant funds. This makes good sense given that the secretly videotaped encounter between two Baltimore ACORN employees and a man and a woman posing as a pimp and prostitute started off as a conversation about how ACORN could help the pair buy a house to start a brothel. The action comes a few days after the Census Bureau severed ties with the organization.

The lopsided Senate vote points to something that has been missing in a lot of the discussion about the ACORN videos: a sense of perspective about just how influential ACORN is. What seems to have elevated the story from a curiosity to a full-blown national outrage is the apparent sense that ACORN is pulling the strings in Washington. But if this were an organization that really had much influence, do you think it would have been dropped this quickly? If it was the trial lawyers, or the insurance companies, or the bankers, or Halliburton, would the reaction have been this swift? I'm guessing not.

I'm not excusing the behavior of the ACORN employees or suggesting that the organizaiton as a whole doesn't bear the responsibility for it. I'm not disagreeing whatsoever with the decisions to cut off funding. I'm just saying that in my experience, I cannot recall an instance when ACORN appeared to be wielding any influence whatsoever in a government decision I covered. The powers that be seemed to pretty much ignore them. We'll see how the House of Representatives reacts to the Senate vote, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see ACORN kicked to the curb.

Those who participated in the 'discussion' were fired by ACORN. Funding for ACORN has ceased. If this is not true - give us information that is not dated May 2009. Bachman should have made at least one RECENT post if what you state is TRUE. There was no 'whore' house set up by ACORN - just extremely poor judgement in having a conversation with apparent criminals - who turned out to be government employees. I have never supported criminal activity or those who have difficulty with telling the CURRENT truth. Your problem with Obama colors your take on almost all issues. The issues are relevant. Democrats refused to allow the bill to come up for another vote to extend the time frame.. This allows ACORN to now have access to the funding ALREADY PUT IN PLACE FOR THEM...

The Dems never pledged to allow drilling in National Parks. There have been huge lease deals signed within the last two months, including off the coast of Alaska. Did you see where Exxon just sold leases they had in Utah for $263 million? Never explored it or drilled, just kept the leases that they bought for $42 million until 2 months before they expired then sold them using a loophole to renew them for Alaskan Oil. Now Alaskan can sit on them without drilling and maybe sell them back to Exxon in 8 years. Hey, I'm doing the capitalist thing, I've got their stock.

The oil companies are sitting on 43,000 sq miles of leases. If they want to drill then let them drill. Bush pushed those leases in the national parks out the door in his last week. He was worse than Clinton.

Oil Leases do not mean there are explorable quantities of oil in the leased area.. The Oil Companies leases large blocks of land to EXPLORE the possibility of recoverable oil.. Most Oil Leases are worthless. Some have deep reserves, however due to Bureaucracy and Environmental impact studies, Rules and Regulations.. the cost are astronomical. So until either technology catches up or a more OIL friendly administration comes in these leases sits un-used.

The end result.. WE PAY HIGHER PRICES.. and other Countries control our future.
