Experiential therapy uses horses for emotional growth

Straight from the horse’s mouth – what exactly is Equine Assisted Psychotherapy?

The term Equine Assisted Psychotherapy may conjure up images of depressed ponies pouring out their childhood past in the minds of many people. “The true practice of Equine Assisted Psychotherapy is a little less imaginative, but still extraordinary,” said Flying Change Founder and Executive Director Lissa Corcoran, “Flying Change uses horses to improve people’s lives.”

Seventh Annual Cattle Barons’ Ball brings a mission of hope

Why in this time of economic woes would the American Cancer Society ask their Southern Crescent Chapter to put on another Cattle Barons’ Ball? The answer is simple; cancer does not take time off. We all have a story of how cancer has affected our lives, because cancer is a part of our society. The American Cancer Society spends it days educating, preventing, and funding research for a cure. These programs are supported by events like the Cattle Barons’ Ball. This is the seventh year of the ball; therefore, we are focusing on seven faces of hope in the fight against cancer. These people from Fayette County, tell the story of why over 60 volunteers devote their time putting on the ball as well as golf and tennis tournaments each year. As a community, we can have a positive effect.

Students need complete eye exams before school

Vision is a dominant process in the growth, development and daily performance of children. In fact, 80 percent of what students learn is through vision. And yet, 86 percent of all school-age children have not had a complete eye examination. Ever. The American Optometric Association has estimated that “60 percent of students identified as ‘problem learners’ have undetected vision problems, meaning that some could see improvement in their school work with a pair of glasses or contact lenses

You hold the light

A good friend of mine and I were working together once and I asked him if he worked on his own vehicles. “Not really,” he said. His father worked on cars so I was surprised that his father never taught him. When I asked him why he said, “I didn’t like working on things with him because all I ever got to do was hold the light.” My friend’s well-intentioned father had not only failed to teach his son, but even more importantly, he created an environment where his son didn’t want to participate.

It’s great to live in America

Independence Day is just a few days away. In the difficult times we live in right now, it is easy to be discouraged. Our retirement accounts are looking meager with the trouble in the stock market, the national debt is out of control, housing values are down, and there are troubles overseas with our allies and enemies alike. No matter what one’s political orientation, there are things to be discouraged about - conservatives are unhappy with the current administration and liberals are discouraged with the huge challenges they believe they inherited from the previous administration.
