Gas leak shuts Dividend Drive for a few hours

Part of Dividend Drive was shut down between 8 a.m. and the early afternoon due to a gas leak caused when a construction crew struck a main line, fire officials said.

Atlanta Gas Light had to shut the valves off to the pipe so it could be repaired, said Peachtree City Fire Marshal David Williamson.

Although a number of people nearby smelled the mercaptan odorant that is added to the natural gas to help detect leaks, the mercaptan is not hazardous in nature and the methane gas itself is lighter than air so it basically rises up into the atmosphere, Williamson added.
