On Oct. 5, Elizabeth Buckalew, an SMHS graduate, was crowned Miss Cherokee Rose, a preliminary in the Miss America system.

She will compete for the title of Miss Georgia in June. Along with winning the title, she won the interview and talent portions of the competition.

Buckalew is a senior at the University of Georgia where she majors in finance and minors in French.

Her platform is high school dropout prevention, and she is president and founder of “Dawgs for Diplomas,” a campus club she created that is responsible for mentoring at-risk high school students.
