Lawrence E. Day, PhD, died peacefully in his home in Peachtree City, Ga. on Sunday, November 23, 2014.

He was born February 12, 1933 in Findlay, Ohio, the son of Paul and Mary Day, both deceased.

He is survived by his wife Darlene (Litton), son Mark (wife Kathie), daughter Betsy (husband Doug Brainard) and son Peter. There are also nine grandchildren.

He attended Miami University of Ohio, graduating in 1955 and was commissioned in the United States Marine Corps where he served on active duty for three years followed by four years in the Marine Corps reserve. He attended Michigan State University where he earned MS and PhD degrees in microbiology, followed by employment at the Pfizer Research Laboratories in Groton, Conn. He then joined, in 1966, Eli Lilly & Co. of Indianapolis, Ind. and held various positions in the Research and Development departments and the Medical Division until his retirement in 1993.

Day published a number of papers and owned several patents. He was active in the American Society of Microbiology (ASM) and served as president of the Indiana Branch of ASM, a member of the national ASM Council in the 1970’s as well as the ASM Investment Committee. As an alumnus of Miami University, he was a member of several scientific advisory committees to the Dean of the College of Arts and Science.

A memorial service will be held December 18, 2014 at 3:30 pm at the Mansion at Oak Hill, 5801 E. 116th St., Carmel, Ind.
